Minister of Home Affairs Hon. Robeson Benn, Commissioner of Police Mr. Clifton Hicken and Deputy Commissioner ‘Administration’ Mr. Calvin Brutus met with the Training Instructors of the Police Academy to discuss the roles and responsibilities to make the Police Academy a professional and successful campus.

The meeting was held at the Officers Training Centre, Camp Road, Georgetown, on February 10, 2024.

Deputy Commissioner ‘Administration’, Mr. Calvin Brutus, who delivered the opening remarks noted the pivotal role of effective administrative structures in supporting the operational efficiency of the Police Academy. Stressing the importance of streamlined processes and resource management, he highlighted the need for meticulous attention to detail in all aspects.

Mr. Brutus also underscored that a well-organised academy lays the foundation for a smooth and productive training environment, ultimately contributing to the overall success of the Academy’s mission and strategic plan.

In addition, he spoke extensively on implementing a more practical approach rather than theoretical in the training curriculum of the Police Academy. Emphasizing the importance of hands-on experience and real-life scenarios, Mr. Brutus advocated for a curriculum that equips recruits with practical skills and problem-solving abilities essential for effective law enforcement.

By bridging the gap between theory and practical, Mr. Brutus aimed to ensure that graduates of the Academy are not only well-versed in academic knowledge but also proficient in applying that knowledge in the field, thus enhancing their readiness and effectiveness as law enforcement officers.

Commissioner Hicken, in his brief remarks, echoed the sentiments expressed by Mr. Brutus, with regard to discipline within the Police Academy. The Top Cop emphasized the pivotal role discipline plays in molding the character and professionalism of law enforcement officers. Expanding on this, Commissioner Hicken delved into the importance of maintaining a strong disciplinary framework within the academy.

As the Top Cop concluded his remarks, Minister Robeson Benn shifted the focus towards the broader vision of national development. With a tone of optimism, he spoke about the pivotal role law enforcement plays in shaping the future of Guyana. He further highlighted the importance of infrastructure development within the Police Force, acknowledging Commissioner Hicken’s efforts in modernising facilities and implementing the strategic plan.

Furthermore, Minister Benn underscored the significance of continuous training and education for Police officers, equipping them with the necessary skills and knowledge to adapt to evolving challenges.

As the meeting drew to a close, the collective commitment of Minister Benn, Commissioner Hicken, and Deputy Commissioner Brutus, resonated throughout the room. Through their shared vision for a professional and successful Police Academy instructors were encouraged to execute their roles effectively as mentors and educators, which would in turn foster a culture of continuous improvement and dedication among members of the Guyana Police Force.
