The Guyana Fire Service rolled out its 48th Fire Prevention Week of observances and activities earlier today ( October 02nd, 2022), commencing with a Religious Service, which was held at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre.
The observances and activities will be ongoing throughout the month of October and aim to keep the public informed about the importance of fire prevention and focus on protecting life and property and safeguarding the environment.
In observance of Fire Prevention Week, Fire Fighters headed by Sub-Officer Ryan Scott visited the Mahdia Full Gospel Fellowship Church and donated a Fire Extinguisher.
The Guyana Fire Service will be engaged in many other outreaches and other awareness activities to commemorate the 48th Fire Prevention Week, which is being observed under the theme, “ “Working Together as One Guyana to Prevent Fires”.
Fire Prevention Week is observed worldwide under the theme, “Fire won’t wait. Plan your escape!”.
*Fire Prevention Week History*
Fire Prevention Week was established by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) in 1922 to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. That tragic conflagration claimed the lives of more than 250 people, destroyed more than 17,400 structures which, left 100,000 homeless and burned more than 2000 acres. The fire began on October 8 and continued into and did most of its damage on October 9, 1871.
