Soil Testing Begins for the Construction of the New Brickdam Police Station

The Honourable Minister of Home Affairs, Mr. Robeson Benn, earlier today, September 07th, 2022, oversaw the geotechnical investigation (soil testing) exercise which will facilitate the construction of the new Brickdam Police Station.
The investigation, which commenced today, will last for about four (4) days and is a collaborative effort by the Projects Unit of the Ministry of Home Affairs, specialists from the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission and the Ministry of Public Works.
The purpose of the investigation is to aid in the selection criteria for the foundation of a twelve (12) storey building, approximately 120ft by 80ft, at Brickdam, Stabroek Georgetown. The building will be used as the new Headquarters for the Guyana Police Force.
The specific objectives are to perform geotechnical tests to acquire information on the ground strata and engineering properties. These objectives are to determine:
• the classification of soil at each layer, and the depths of the layers,
• the cohesion and adhesion of each soil stratum,
• the angle of friction of the soil at each soil stratum,
• the rate and magnitude of soil consolidation,
• groundwater condition and permeability of the soil.
These objectives will be determined by drilling three (3) boreholes diagonally along the proposed site location to Corpina formation. Disturbed and undisturbed samples are expected to be obtained at the different soil strata for testing in accordance with American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) or American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) standards.
