Road Safety Council Launched in Region Nine

Regional Division #9 held the launching of its Road Safety Council at the Rupununi Chamber of Commerce Building, Lethem.

The ceremony was attended by the Minister of Home Affairs Hon. Robeson Benn MP, Deputy Commissioner (ag) Operations Mr. Ravindradat Budhram, Traffic Chief, Superintendent Dennis Stephen, Commander of Regional Division #9 Senior Superintendent Raphael Rose, Regional Chairman of Region #9 Mr. Brian Allicock, Mayor of Lethem Mr. John Macedo, Chairman of the National Road Safety Council Mr. Earl Lambert, GNRSC Coordinator Ms. Ramona Doorgen, PRO of the Guyana Police Force Mr. Stan Gouveia, as well as other senior and junior police ranks, Road Safety officials and citizens.

The election of officers was a smooth process and the new office bearers were charged by the Hon. Minister to work closely with the Guyana Police Force as we seek to ramp up our information dissemination when it comes to road safety. The Minister also challenged the Police to continue working towards making police stations friendly spaces.

DC ‘Ops’ Mr Budhram noted that the region is now in receipt of more motor vehicles and cycles which will aid in its traffic control as development is rapidly accelerating in the region while the Traffic Chief noted that the partnership between the Police and the GNRSC is integral to reducing accidents, incidents and the loss of life.

The Coordinator of the GNRSC Ms. Ramona Doorgen noted that the collaboration between the two organizations will see to more regions being actively involved in road safety measures while both the Mayor of Lethem Mr. John Macedo and the Chairman of Region Nine lauded Government’s initiative of making road safety a countrywide priority as they welcome the initiative and noted their support.

The Minister then distributed several safety helmets to motorists upon the conclusion of the ceremony before he engaged in a brief walk about in Lethem with the newly-elected Road Safety Council of Lethem.
