President Ali Commissions New Georgetown- North West Ferry

The Honourable Minister of Home Affairs, Mr. Robeson Benn, on Sunday, April 23, 2023 joined His Excellency, President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali, several fellow cabinet members, the visiting Indian Minister of External Affairs, the Honourable Dr. Subrahmanyam Jaishankar and team, government officials, members of the diplomatic community, and members of the private sector at the GuySuCo Sugar terminal for the Commissioning Ceremony of the new Georgetown- North West ferry, the MV MA LISHA.

The MV Ma Lisha is a 70-metre-long vessel with a speed of 15 knots, which, according to the Minister of Public Works, Bishop Juan Edghill, is faster than the current one.

“This boat is faster; we will be reducing travel time-sometimes between six and eight hours. MV Ma Lisha is a game changer in water transportation in Guyana”, Minister Edghill stated.

The MV Ma Lisha was built at a cost of US$12.77 million through a partnership between the governments of Guyana and India.

The ferry, designed to international standards, can transport a load of 250 tonnes, which includes 294 passengers, 14 cars, two fully loaded trucks, and ten containers. It also contains a cold storage section for transporting perishables.

The vessel arrived at Port Georgetown on April 6 from India, having travelled nearly 11,500 nautical miles. The MV Ma Lisha is a contemporary ocean-going passenger and cargo ferry that will sail from Georgetown to the North West District.
