NAREI Donates Coconut Plants to Prison Service

The National Agricultural Research and Extension Institute (NAREI) last Friday donated one hundred, 18 months coconut plants to the Guyana Prison Service (GPS).
The plants were presented to the GPS’ Tiffany Trim, one of the officers attach to the agriculture sector by NAREI’s Daniel Chand at the Plant Nursery located at # 63 Village Corentyne, Berbice.
According to Ms. Trim the plants will be planted by inmates under the supervision of Officers at the various Prison farms. The inmates usually tend to the various farms operated by the GPS. This offers them practical knowledge of farming. They are also exposed to theoretical lessons.
Ms. Trim expressed gratitude to NAREI for the donation. “We have developed a relationship with NAREI over a number of years…We knew that NAREI was the place to get quality coconut plants,” she added.
Mr. Chand during his brief remarks said that the donation is part of NAREI’s social responsibility. He also urged the Prison Service to make full use of the donation.
