The Ministry of Home Affairs announces that on February 12-13, 2025, the Secretariat of the Ministerial Taskforce on Trafficking in Persons facilitated two training seminars on Human Trafficking, the Smuggling of Migrants, and Child Labour. The sessions were attended by forty-eight (48) police recruits enrolled in the Guyana Police Force Training Academy’s General Recruits Training Course (Batch 388 and 389).
This initiative is designed to equip recruits with the necessary knowledge and skills to detect, identify, investigate, and prosecute these heinous crimes and related offenses.
The training, which commenced on February 12, 2025, is part of the Ministry of Home Affairs’ ongoing commitment, along with the Ministerial Taskforce on Trafficking in Persons, to enhance the capacity of the Guyana Police Force. This initiative also aims to foster collaboration and safeguard the rights of vulnerable individuals, particularly young women and children who are often targeted by traffickers.
The training curriculum was developed in collaboration with key partners, including the Ministry of Labour, the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security (C-TIP Unit), the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, and the Guyana Police Force—Major Crimes—TIP Unit. Topics covered included understanding human trafficking and migrant smuggling trends, the 2023 Anti-TIP legislation and human rights framework, child labour and labour legislation, victim identification and investigation, and victim support and protection.
The Ministry of Home Affairs remains committed to combatting human trafficking by investing in training and capacity-building initiatives, contributing to a future where all individuals are free from exploitation and abuse.
The Ministry urges the public to stay vigilant and support national anti-trafficking efforts. Any suspected cases of human trafficking should be reported immediately to the national hotline at 227-4083, 623-5030, or 624-0079 (Spanish), or to the nearest police station.
