Ministers visit to the communities of Matthews Ridge and Port Kaituma located in Barima-Waini, Region One

Hon. Vickram Bharrat, M.P., Minister of Natural Resources, accompanied by Hon. Robeson Benn, M.P., Minister of Home Affairs and Hon. Nigel Dharamlall, M.P., Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, visited the communities of Matthews Ridge and Port Kaituma located in Barima-Waini, Region One. Also present were senior representatives of the three Ministries, the Ministry of Labour, the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission, the Guyana Forestry Commission and the Prime Minister’s Office. The Regional Executive Officer and Regional Chairman of Region One were also in attendance.

The Ministers engaged in discussion with the Bosai Mineral Group subsidiary, Guyana Manganese Inc. as it relates to the ongoing production of the company, in addition to its development plans and commitment to social responsibility. During the outreach, the Ministers and team facilitated an inspection of the road from Matthews Ridge to Port Kaituma for which GMI is responsible for maintaining.

The team also interacted with residents of the Matthews Ridge community and met with the residents, inclusive of loggers and miners, of Port Kaituma.

This visit by the Hon. Ministers is a follow up to His Excellency’s, President Irfaan Ali, recent visit to the region and in keeping with the promise to have a team return to the region for further discussion with GMI and also as part of the Government’s commitment to continue interacting with members of the public in all regions to further enhance community development.
