Standing before a vibrant crowd at the Fitzburg Recreational Ground in Matarkai, Minister of Home Affairs, Hon. Robeson Benn, delivered a stirring address during the 55th Republic Anniversary Flag Raising Ceremony on Saturday evening. His message was one of pride, progress, and promise, as he called on the people of Guyana to seize the unprecedented opportunities unfolding across the nation and to build a legacy of prosperity for future generations.
In attendance were Mr. Keith Parker, NDC Chairman; Mrs. Lambert, Regional Prime Minister Representative for Region One; Mr. Jason Ramjohn, Assistant Regional Executive Officer; Deputy Commander Deputy Superintendent James Tappin; and other esteemed officials.
During his feature address, Minister Benn expressed gratitude to the people of Matarkai for their unwavering commitment to the nation’s growth and development. He extended warm greetings from His Excellency, President Dr. Irfaan Ali, Prime Minister Brigadier (Ret’d) Mark Phillips, Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo, and the entire Cabinet, underscoring the administration’s dedication to advancing Guyana’s prosperity.
“Guyana is in a very special period, a transformative moment in our history,” Minister Benn remarked. “While we are fortunate to witness these developments, it is imperative that we pass on this legacy to our younger generation, empowering them to lead our nation into a new era of prosperity.”
During his visit to Region One, Minister Benn observed the significant infrastructural improvements in Port Kaituma, Matthews Ridge, Arakaka, Eclipse Falls, and surrounding communities. He praised the ongoing projects, including the construction of concrete roads, new buildings, and enhancements in healthcare, education, and welfare services.
Highlighting the importance of human development alongside physical infrastructure, Minister Benn underscored the government’s focus on creating opportunities for youth, women, and children. He encouraged young people to pursue education and skills training, particularly in fields that will support Guyana’s burgeoning sectors such as oil and gas, mining, and infrastructure.
“Opportunities abound for our young people to become the new professionals, doctors, lawyers, engineers, and scientists that our nation needs,” he said. “We want our children to not only dream but to achieve, to take full advantage of initiatives like the GOAL scholarship program and the now tuition-free University of Guyana.”
Minister Benn also pointed to the upcoming development of the Oko West Gold Mine, which will create thousands of jobs, and highlighted the government’s ambition to build critical infrastructure such as bridges and energy projects to further stimulate economic growth.
Emphasizing the role of the Ministry of Home Affairs in public safety and security, Minister Benn reaffirmed the government’s commitment to creating safer communities. He called on residents to join in the collective effort to foster a secure environment where everyone can thrive.
Minister Benn later witnessed the parade by the joint services, which featured the ceremonial hoisting of the Golden Arrowhead, symbolizing the nation’s unity, pride, and independence.
The Region One Flag Raising Ceremony at the Fitzburg Recreational Ground featured cultural performances, community engagement, and a renewed sense of hope for the future.
