A juvenile at the Juvenile Holding Centre (JHC) has successfully secured four passes in this year’s Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) examinations, showcasing the effectiveness of the center’s comprehensive education programme. The student, whose identity remains confidential, achieved Grade II in English A and Office Administration, and Grade III in Principles of Business and Social Studies.

Karen Schmidt, Juvenile Correctional Teacher at the JHC, revealed that preparing the juvenile for the CSEC exams involved four months of intensive study, including regular daytime classes and additional late-night sessions. Schmidt noted that the juvenile initially hesitated to participate due to self-doubt, but with encouragement from the JHC team, he committed to the programme and ultimately succeeded.

Social Worker Sabrina Persaud commended the juvenile’s responsible and respectful demeanor, highlighting his unwavering commitment throughout the preparation period.

Mrs. Joan Ann Edghill-Stuart, Director of Juvenile Justice, expressed her gratitude to the dedicated JHC team for their tireless efforts in supporting the juveniles. She also thanked the Honorable Robeson Benn, Minister of Home Affairs, and the Government of Guyana for their continued investment in juvenile rehabilitation programmes across the country.

The JHC extends special appreciation to the National Centre for Educational Resource Development (NCERD) for their collaboration in providing additional teachers, ensuring each juvenile receives personalised attention based on their academic needs and grade level.

This achievement underscores the importance of education in juvenile rehabilitation and the positive impact of collaborative efforts between correctional facilities and educational institutions.
