Minister Benn, PS Ally Leads Inspection of Historic Former Fire Service Headquarters Building
Following the visit to the Brickdam Police Station construction site earlier today (June 4, 2024), Minister of Home Affairs Hon. Robeson Benn, accompanied by Permanent Secretary Mr. Andre Ally, conducted a comprehensive walkthrough of the former Fire Service Headquarters located in Stabroek, Georgetown.
The purpose of the visit was to thoroughly assess the current structural condition of the historic building, which has played a pivotal role in the city’s emergency response infrastructure over the years.
Although no longer operating as the main fire service headquarters, the facility continues to house the marine unit, maintaining their critical operations and safeguarding Guyana’s waterways.
During the walkthrough, Minister Benn and Mr. Ally carefully evaluated the structural integrity and overall state of the building. They toured areas that were once hubs of activity for fire service personnel but now stand vacant, as well as the section still utilised by the marine unit.
“This former headquarters valiantly served our citizens for decades, responding to countless emergencies,” Minister Benn remarked. “Determining its current state is crucial as we explore options to renovate or repurpose this historic asset, maximising its value for all Guyanese.”
The Minister emphasised the importance of the marine unit’s sustained operations from this location, providing vital emergency response capabilities along the country’s vast rivers and coastlines.
