Information Technology Classes Commence at Timehri Prison

The Welfare and Corrections Department in keeping with their mandate to rehabilitate inmates has launched its information technology program at the Timehri Prison; with the aim of covering all locations by the end of April.

This opportunity was made possible through the donation received from the International Development Bank IDB and Ministry of Legal Affairs; this saw all prison locations being afforded computer labs.

Director of Prisons Niklon Elliot in his comments stated that the initiative comes at a time where technology is becoming more valued to society. The labs will allow inmates to access online training programs, videos and foreign language programs.

The Officer in Charge of Prisoners Welfare and Corrections Mrs. Marielle Bristol-Grant in her comments stated that the inmates welcomed the initiative and there is already a wait list of interested inmates to benefit from the class. She also stated that this opportunity will allow inmates to function in a technological society upon release.

The program is three months long and inmates are expected to be computer literate at its completion. Currently 20 inmates are benefiting from the program. Inmates will no longer be at a disadvantage in this particular area when their sentences are complete.
