“Fresh Start” Initiative Offers New Beginning

On Friday, February 24, 2023, a juvenile who is now reintegrated into society became the recipient of the government’s “Fresh Start” Initiative, under the auspices of the Guyana Prison Service.

The Fresh Start programme is dedicated to reducing criminal recidivism and is also aimed at expanding opportunities for occupational training, with a focus on ensuring that inmates develop the job skills they need to find work after release. As part of this effort, tools were provided to support the juvenile in further developing his craft and skills, which also provides the necessary motivation for success when reintegrating into the community.

Minister of Home Affairs, Hon. Robeson Benn, handed over a joinery kit at a simple presentation ceremony held at the Ministry of Home Affairs head office.

Mr. Benn reiterated that the government remains committed to ensuring that access and opportunities are made available and encouraged the young man to take advantage of this fresh start with fresh energy and fresh opportunities to accomplish his dreams.

The enthusiastic youth thanked the Ministry and the Guyana Prison Service for their continued support.

Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs Ms. Mae Toussaint Jr. Thomas, Officer in Charge of Prisons’ Welfare and Corrections Mrs. Marielle Bristol-Grant, Principal Administrative Secretary (G) Ms. Shireen Andrews, Assistant Chief Administrative Officer, New Opportunity Corp. (NOC) Mr. Shelton Daniels, and Joinery Instructor Mr. Charles Joseph were among those present at the handing over ceremony.
