Minister of Home Affairs, Hon. Oneidge Walrond, accompanied by Permanent Secretary Mr. Andre Ally and Deputy Permanent Secretary Mr. Dwayne Adams, earlier today conducted a site visit at the new Brickdam Police Station, a transformative project set to redefine the landscape of policing in Guyana.
Also present were Deputy Commissioner ‘Operations’ Mr. Errol Watts, Deputy Commander of Regional Division 4 ‘A’ Mr. Michael Kingston, a team from the Ministry of Home Affairs’ Project Department, and representatives from the China National Overseas Engineering Corporation (CNOC).
During her address to the media, Minister Walrond highlighted the government’s broader vision, noting, “This initiative reflects the forward vision of our government as we continue to modernise Guyana’s security infrastructure. We are not only rebuilding what was lost but reimagining what policing facilities should look like for decades to come.”
She described the new Brickdam Police Station as being designed “to set the standard for public infrastructure in our country – strong, safe, modern, and responsive to the needs of our citizens.”
Minister Walrond emphasised that the project represents more than just a new building, stating that it “marks a significant milestone for our police force and the city’s security infrastructure.” She explained that the headquarters will serve as the central hub for leadership and divisional operations while symbolising the government’s commitment to transforming the Guyana Police Force into a world-class institution.
“It fosters a professional and modern environment, removing outdated bureaucratic practices and equipping our officers with the tools and support needed to deliver cutting-edge policing services,” Minister Walrond added.
Speaking on the ambitious scale of the project, now the tallest building in Georgetown, Minister Walrond expressed confidence in its progress under careful oversight. She praised the building’s advanced fire and safety specifications, noting, “It is clear this building is setting a new benchmark. I believe it will stand as an example of what our public buildings can and should be.”
She credited the project team and Permanent Secretary Ally for their diligence and attention to detail in ensuring “a facility that is truly fit for its purpose.”
The Minister further underscored the government’s commitment to the future, stating:
“This project represents our commitment to investing in the future and ensuring that Guyana’s development is matched by institutions capable of serving our people at the highest level.”
She also highlighted the importance of police welfare, affirming, “Our vision extends beyond infrastructure to the welfare of our ranks. This building reflects our recognition that to demand excellence from our officers, we must also provide them with a comfortable and professional working environment. Their well-being is paramount as we strive to offer the highest standards of safety and service to our citizens.”
The 12-story, USD $28 million Brickdam facility is being constructed within the ‘A’ Division Headquarters, following the devastating fire on October 2, 2021, which destroyed the former wooden complex. Once completed, it will serve as a modern hub for policing and public safety, enhancing the operational capabilities of the Guyana Police Force and strengthening its service to the public.
Meanwhile, Minister Walrond also visited the East La Penitence Police Station, where she interacted with ranks and received a briefing on the progress of the new facility currently under construction.
The Ministry of Home Affairs remains steadfast in its resolve to deliver world-class policing facilities that enhance officer capability and community safety. The anticipated completion of Brickdam and East La Penitence stations will mark a new chapter in Guyana’s public security landscape, reinforcing trust and confidence among citizens.
