On Thursday, June 19th, 2025, the Guyana Police Force (GPF), in collaboration with the Guyana Prison Service, the Amethyst School of Martial Arts, and the Security Training Academy, launched a three-day โTaser Certification Course” (covering CEW, TX200P, and BWC systems) at the Officersโ Training Centre.
The opening ceremony was chaired by Deputy Superintendent London, who introduced Assistant Director of Prisons Mr. Pilgrim to provide an overview of the training. Mr. Pilgrim emphasized that the program is a Conducted Energy Weapon (CEW) Operator Certification Course, not just routine training.
โThis certification ensures that officers operate within established legal frameworks,โ he stated.
Mr. Pilgrim also highlighted the critical role of this training in election security preparedness for the upcoming General and Regional Elections. He reminded officers that tasers should only be used on non-compliant individuals, reinforcing the importance of proper use-of-force protocols.
Deputy Commissioner and Commander 4A, Mr. McBean, expressed his approval of the initiative, noting that this marks the first time a non-lethal approach of this kind is being implemented in the Guyana Police Force. He urged all participating ranks to absorb the training thoroughly and assured them that successful completion would result in official certification.
Colonel Souvenir, Chairman of the Joint Services Training Committee, echoed these sentiments, stressing that adapting to change is essential for law enforcement, reinforcing the need for modern, less-lethal policing methods.
This training underscores the GPFโs commitment to professional development, operational readiness, and the responsible use of force in maintaining public safety.
