The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Mrs. Shalimar Ali-Hack and team, visited the Juvenile Holding Centre (JHC), on Thursday, January, 4, 2024, to have a first-hand insight into the facility and Juveniles currently being housed at the centre.
During the visit, the DPP was given a walk-through of the facility by the Director of the Juvenile Justice Department, Mrs. Joan Ann Edghill-Stuart, and was briefed on the various educational programmes offered to the juveniles at the centre. The DPP was also provided with an update on the various offences and cases that are awaiting trial date.
After the walk-through, the DPP briefly encouraged the juveniles to make good use of the educational opportunities being made available at the holding centre, noting the positive benefits it will have on their lives after leaving the centre. She also emphasized the importance of maintaining good hygiene while they are in the JHC and cautioned them about staying away from the use of narcotics and trying to escape.
Mrs. Edghill-Stuart, together with Ms. June Ann Payne, Administrator of the JHC and staff, expressed their heartfelt gratitude to the DPP for taking time off of her busy schedule to visit the facility.
The Juvenile Holding Centre, which falls under the ambit of the Ministry of Home Affairs, will continue to work towards rehabilitation of Juveniles throughout Guyana.
