On Monday, January 08th, 2024, President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali turned the sod for the construction of the US$28 million 12-story Brickdam Police Station ‘A’ Division Headquarters, marks a pivotal moment in law enforcement history.

The ceremony commemorated the Government of Guyana’s commitment to restoring and bolstering the safety and security infrastructure in the nation. This event was a testament to the government’s resilience following the devastating fire that engulfed the previous station on October 02, 2021.

During his feature address President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali, underscored the significance of the new structure, stating, “The new Brickdam Police Station will stand tall as a testament to our commitment to the safety and well-being of our citizens.” The head of state emphasized the importance of understanding the national security architecture, aiming not just to reduce crime but also to cultivate a culture of safe living and proactive policing within the country.

“Security isn’t just about combating crime; it’s about cultivating proactive policing, shaping mindsets away from crime,” President Ali elaborated. Highlighting the intellectual prowess within the Guyana Police Force, President Ali cited the numerous academic achievements among its members, emphasizing the qualitative aspect of service rather than mere quantitative metrics.

Speaking of infrastructural developments, President Ali detailed plans for a Marine Division, integration with the Guyana Defence Force for enhanced air capabilities, and a state-of-the-art police academy.

Minister of Home Affairs, Hon. Robeson Benn, acknowledged the collaborative effort in responding to the tragic loss of the previous station. He emphasized the importance of rigorous engagement with engineers and the need for strategic planning, stating, “The infrastructure is not merely physical. It is about leadership, better management, and the operational engagement that is essential to bridge the gap between the police force and the public.”

Minister Benn also stressed on the need for unity and collective effort in building the country, emphasizing that development and progress are achievable only through collaboration and understanding among citizens. “There will be times when we disagree with each other, but with communication, understanding, and willingness, there is always a clear pathway to success”, Minister Benn further highlighted.

Speaking about the opportunities presented by the country’s resource benefits, Minister Benn alluded that, “the resource benefits that are upon us can only be utilized if we come together, if we understand our people, seek peace and harmony, and are willing to do the jobs required for our country’s development”.

Additionally, Minister Benn stressed the importance of conscious engagement with the public and continuous maintenance of the infrastructure, ensuring that the new infrastructure not only improves efficiency but also aids in creating a more conducive environment for police-public interaction.

Commissioner of Police, Mr. Clifton Hicken, highlighted the transformation of the Guyana Police Force from a mere ‘force to a service’. He stressed the significance of the new infrastructure in aiding this transition, stating that the infrastructure not only creates a conducive environment for public interaction but also modernizes the force with the competence needed for various operations, including addressing domestic violence and improving consciousness and efficiency.

“The construction signifies a safer, progressive Guyana,” Commissioner Hicken assured, aligning with the President’s vision. “We’re moving from ad hoc decisions to structured strategies guided by our strategic plan.”

Mr. Hicken spoke about the strategic location of the new 12-story building and how it would aid in reducing response times and bridging the gap between the Police Force and the public.

The Top Cop also emphasized the importance of maintaining high standards in service delivery to meet the expectations of the public.

The event, attended by key stakeholders, symbolized not only the physical construction of a building but a vision for a safer, more progressive Guyana. The collective commitment to security, community engagement, and modernization echoed a forward-looking approach to law enforcement.
