Minister of Home Affairs, Hon. Robeson Benn, made an impromptu visit to the Leonora Fire Station, where Leading Fireman Sookra briefed him on ongoing operations. The visit allowed the Minister to gain firsthand insight into the challenges the fire station faces and underscored the importance of preparedness and teamwork.
At the Fire Service Training Centre, which is housed within the Leonora Fire Station compound, Minister Benn addressed the largest cohort of trainees in the history of the Fire Service. The training course, which began on May 13, 2024, is expected to conclude on August 23, 2024, and includes 98 recruits.
During the visit, the recruits were engaged in simulation exercises led by Sub Officer Jermaine Reid, Section Leader C. Allen, Leading Fireman D. Dillion, and Leading Fireman K. King. These exercises are designed to prepare the recruits for real-life emergencies, ensuring they develop the skills and confidence needed for their roles.
In his address to the recruits, Minister Benn emphasized the essential qualities of courage and discipline for success in the Fire Service. He urged the recruits to approach their responsibilities with a strong commitment to these principles.
“Serving in the fire service requires courage. You must stay vigilant, prioritize safety, and protect not only yourself but your colleagues as wellโ, Minister Benn stated. He continued, “Courage doesnโt mean the absence of fear; it means carrying out your duties with discipline and determinationโ.
The Minister also stressed the importance of adhering to safety protocols and maintaining discipline, especially during operations involving high-pressure gas and oil. These elements, he explained, are crucial for the safety of both firefighters and the communities they serve.
Additionally, Minister Benn highlighted the values of respect and inclusivity within the Fire Service. He encouraged the recruits to foster a culture of professional development, ensuring they are well-prepared to meet the challenges of their new roles.
This visit reaffirms the governmentโs commitment to strengthening the Guyana Fire Service and ensuring that all recruits are equipped to meet the demands of their critical roles with courage and discipline.
